Ron Vandegrift, 82, of Wake Forest died on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Select Specialty Hospital in Durham, NC from complications from a medical procedure.

Ron was born in Long Beach, CA, the son of the late Albert Leslie and Olivia Hahn Vandegrift and he later grew up in Denver, CO.

After graduation from the University of Northern Colorado where he helped start Sigma Kai Fraternity in 1960, he began his career with Traveler’s Insurance in Hartford, CT. He remained there until 1971 when he moved to Washington, DC for a career with the US Postal Service. Ron retired as a federal employee in 1992.

Ron is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Ron Vandegrift, Jr.(Lauree) of Gaithersburg, MD; daughter, Jane Vandegrift-Hay(Don) of Las Vegas, NV; step-daughters, Lori Kautonen(Asko) of Vihti Jarvi, Finland; and Melanie Rogers(Terrell) of Youngsville, NC; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild (A great joy to him.); sisters, Leslie Vandegrift(Ray) of Denver, CO and Rita Mill(Tom) of Plains, MT.

A celebration of Ron’s life was held at 2 o’clock, Monday, June 18, 2018 at Richland Creek Community Church, Wake Forest with Pastor Brian Merritt officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations are made to The American Red Cross or St. Jude Children’s hospital.
