Donald William Johnson Obituary

Donald William Johnson, 79, of Wake Forest, formerly of Charlotte, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the Durham VA Hospital. He was born in Rutherford County on November 7, 1946, to the late William & Ruby McCurry Johnson.

After finishing school in Rutherfordton, Don ventured off to Western Carolina University before putting his life on hold to serve his country in the United States Army. He proudly served during the Vietnam War from 1968 until 1971, including service in Vietnam. During his time in the Army, he attained the rank of SP5 and served as an Administrative Specialist and Office Manager. His commendations included the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, and two Overseas Service Bars. He was honorably discharged following his military service, a chapter of his life that remained a great source of pride.

Following his military service, Donald entered the automotive industry and later took a position with Independence Nissan (East Charlotte Nissan), where he faithfully worked for many years and retired as Sales Manager.

Don was a devoted football and basketball fan and was always up for catching a game. When he was not watching one of his favorite teams, you could often find him outside working in his garden or tending to his yard, which was truly his happy place. He also loved a good road trip. The memories made along the way and the stories that came from them will be cherished by his family for generations to come.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Donald is survived by his wife of 46 years, Betty Lou Ledbetter Johnson; children, Eric Johnson & wife Amber of Greenville, Sonya Johnson of Conshohocken, PA and Heather Stainback & husband Justin of Franklinton; grandchildren, Hannah & Lily Johnson of Greenville and Holden Stainback of Franklinton; along with extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America, 8719 Colesville Rd., Suite 100, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910. (vva.org)
