Gerardo Caicedo

Gerardo Caicedo, un querido esposo, padre, abuelo y humanista, falleció el viernes 19 de septiembre de 2025, a la edad de 97 años, rodeado de su familia en Wake Forest, Carolina del Norte.

Nacido y criado en la ciudad costera de Guayaquil, Ecuador, Gerardo fue el único hijo de Segundo Caicedo e Isabel Escudero. Su infancia fue una mezcla de la vida en la ciudad y momentos tranquilos en la finca de la familia de su madre en la fresca serranía cerca de Ambato. Después de graduarse del colegio Vicente Rocafuerte, se unió al negocio de materiales de construcción de su padre, sentando las bases para una vida de emprendimiento.

En Guayaquil, conoció al amor de su vida, Mercedes Núñez. Después de un largo noviazgo, le propuso matrimonio y se casaron el 26 de diciembre de 1958. Su matrimonio de 66 años fue un testimonio de su amor y compañerismo duraderos.

Gerardo fue un hombre de diversas pasiones. Durante más de cuatro décadas, construyó un exitoso negocio de joyería de moda, pero también fue un intelectual apasionado. Lector ávido, le encantaba entablar conversaciones largas y reflexivas sobre la actualidad y el gobierno. Esta pasión lo llevó a obtener una licenciatura en ciencias políticas y sociología de la Universidad de Guayaquil, la cual completó posteriormente en su vida.

A Gerardo le gustaba viajar y experimentar nuevas culturas. Entre sus recuerdos más preciados estaba un viaje que él y Mercedes hicieron a Europa para su 40 aniversario de bodas.

A Gerardo le sobreviven su devota esposa, Mercedes; sus hijas, Isabel McFarlane (Samy) y María Caicedo (Michael Goedecke); y sus cuatro adorados nietos, Michael, Stephanie, Camilo y Patricia.

Será recordado por su amabilidad, elocuencia y su inquebrantable amor por su familia. Su presencia iluminaba cada habitación y sus discursos en eventos especiales eran un placer de escuchar. El legado de Gerardo vive en los corazones de aquellos a quienes tocó.

Gerardo Caicedo, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and humanist, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the age of 97, surrounded by his family in Wake Forest, North Carolina.

Born and raised in the coastal city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, Gerardo was the only son of Segundo Caicedo and Isabel Escudero. His childhood was a blend of city life and quiet moments spent on his mother's family estate in the cool highlands near Ambato. After graduating from Vincente Rocafuerte High School, he joined his father's construction materials business, laying the foundation for a life of entrepreneurship.

In Guayaquil, he met the love of his life, Mercedes Nunez. Following a long courtship, he proposed, and they were married on December 26, 1958. Their 66-year marriage was a testament to their enduring love and partnership.

Gerardo was a man of diverse passions. For over four decades, he built a successful fashion jewelry business, but he was also a passionate intellectual. An avid reader, he loved engaging in long, thoughtful conversations about current events and government. This passion led him to pursue a bachelor's degree in political science and sociology from the University of Guayaquil, which he completed later in life.

Gerardo enjoyed traveling and experiencing new cultures. Among his most cherished memories was a trip he and Mercedes took to Europe for their 40th wedding anniversary.

Gerardo is survived by his devoted wife, Mercedes; his daughters, Isabel McFarlane (Samy) and Maria Caicedo (Michael Goedecke); and his four adoring grandchildren, Michael, Stephanie, Camilo, and Patricia.

He will be remembered for his kindness, eloquence, and unwavering love for his family. His presence brought light to every room, and his insightful speeches at special events were a joy to hear. Gerardo's legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on September 25, 2025, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Wake Forest. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
