Margaret Ellen Moore Obituary

Margaret Ellen Moore, dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and friend has entered the life eternal promised by her Lord and Savior. Her earthly being passed away early Thursday morning on December 9, 2021, in Rolesville, NC at the age of 84 after several years living with dementia.

Margaret was born on February 20, 1937, in Corvallis Oregon. Margaret, known as Peg to family and friends, graduated from Elkton High School in Elkton, OR in 1955 and received her BS in Education from Oregon College of Education in 1959. She married the late Reuben (Ben) Moore on August 22, 1959, and they lived in Oregon, Alaska, and California, before settling in Riverview, MI in 1968.

While living in Michigan, Peg was active at First Presbyterian Church of Trenton, served the City of Riverview as a commissioner, and was a Girl Scout leader. In her life, she held several jobs, but Peg was particularly proud of a couple of unique jobs she had as a young adult: telephone operator and fire lookout. Early in her marriage, Peg taught elementary school which helped Ben finish college. She took several years off to raise her three children but later worked as a substitute teacher primarily in special education. She also sold Avon for several years, but since she sold primarily to family and friends at her cost, she never made any money!

Peg was a very nurturing, caring person and was the caregiver for her husband during his illness, as well as for several friends. She was a great, hands-on mother and thoroughly enjoyed being a grandmother. She adored her grandchildren and loved watching them on the soccer field, making pizzelles with them, or simply spending time with them. She loved a bargain and never bought anything at full price. It was always exciting to open her care packages because they were filled with random, but always thoughtful gifts. Peg loved animals. She always had a pet cat and eventually became a dog person when she got a Jack Russel puppy. Quite a menagerie of other animals passed through her home including ducks, rabbits, gerbils, mice, quails, a parakeet, and a guinea pig.

In her free time, Peg enjoyed baking, reading, going to garage sales, gardening, and sewing (she made great Halloween costumes!). Every summer she looked forward to driving from Michigan to the west coast with her family, and later with her dog Megan, to visit extended family in Oregon and California. Even though she spent most of her life living in Michigan, she always considered herself an Oregonian.

Peg was a beautiful and loving woman who didn’t take life too seriously. She never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation with just about anyone. All who loved her dearly will never forget her smile, tenacity, wit, and undying love for them.

Margaret is predeceased by her husband, Reuben Moore; her parents, Louis and Frances Price; her birth mother, Mamie Caviness; and half-sister, Sandra Sanders. Peg is survived by her three children: Janice (Randy) Chatfield of Philomath, OR; Elizabeth (Andres) Esguerra of Wake Forest, NC; and Michael Moore of Philomath, OR. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren: Paige (Colden) Beert, Benjamin Chatfield, Adam Esguerra, Andrew Chatfield, Josephine Moore, and Danielle Moore. In addition, she is survived by her three sisters: Joan Larson, Ruth (George) Stellmon, and Penny Lucas; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Moore’s Celebration of Life service is not scheduled at this time but will be held early next year in Glendale, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina in Peg’s memory.
