Martha Belo Underwood

Martha Belo Underwood, 93, of Raleigh, passed away Tuesday evening, February 21, 2023 at Brookdale Wake Forest. She was born in Wake County to the late Harry Louis Belo and Nora Estelle O’Briant Belo.

Martha was employed by Hudson Belk for 25 years as a bridal consultant and a home product consultant, helping hundreds of young Wake County newlyweds prepare for their weddings over the years. One of the special privileges she enjoyed was being a food judge at the NC State Fair for 35 years. As a Wake County native, she shared many stories with her children and grandchildren about growing up in Raleigh and how the city evolved over her lifetime. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family.

Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday evening, February 28, 2023 at Clancy Strickland Wheeler Funeral Home. A private family burial will be held at the Raleigh National Cemetery at a later date.

Mrs. Underwood is survived by her children, Lisa Hudson Moore & husband Chuck of Belmont, Paul Hudson & wife Jackie of Raleigh and Mark Hudson & wife Sandra of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Laura Skaff & husband Sam of Charlotte, Matt Moore & wife Emily of Belmont, Ashley Randall & husband Teddy of Raleigh, Travis Hudson & wife Kiara of Raleigh and Mackenzie Hudson of Wake Forest; great-grandchildren, Kennedy, Madeline & Andrew Skaff, Jackson & Hudson Moore, Carter & Holland Randall and Adam Hudson. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Dewey Underwood.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Mrs. Underwood’s memory to Transitions Life Care, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
