Mary Alix Downie-Wallace, 49, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on the evening of Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at WakeMed Cary Campus.
Born on October 27, 1975, in Cumberland County. Her life was marked by compassion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to service, not just to her family, but to countless strangers across the country during their most difficult moments.
Mary dedicated much of her life to disaster response efforts, working tirelessly to restore vital services to communities in crisis. Whether through storms, floods, or other emergencies, she brought strength and leadership to recovery operations. Her hands-on work with Bidding Electric and SEC saw her running crews for convention setups and tear downs, yet she always made sure her family came first.
She is survived by her husband and the love of her life, Byron Wallace; her sons, Connor Downie and Christopher Downie; her adopted mother, Rose Marie Downie; her brother, Patrick Downie; her sisters, Christina Houser, Amanda Bane and husband Ryan, and Jennifer Hammond; nephews, Ethan Downie and James Westmoreland; nieces, Kaitlyn Downie and Alyson Keller ; her aunt, Mary Smith and husband Greg of Arizona; and many extended family members and friends whose lives were touched by her warmth, humor, and enduring care. She was preceded in death by her father, Lee Sheldon Downie and her sister, Angela Elizabeth Churchill.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Clancy Strickland Wheeler Funeral Home. A celebration of her life will also take place at a later date at the Berkeley Café.
