SFC José Antonio Mendez, Sr.

SFC José Antonio Mendez Ramos, 77, of Raleigh, NC, peacefully passed away Saturday morning, September 19, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born in New York City, NY to the late Antonio Mendez and Margarita Ramos Mendez. 

Mr. Mendez served his country faithfully and honorably before retiring as Sergeant First Class in the United States Army after 22 plus years of service. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, family member, and friend who strived to follow after the steps of Jesus. He will be greatly missed.

Viewing will be held at 1 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, September 24, 2020 at Clancy Strickland Wheeler Funeral Home. Funeral service will commence at 2 o’clock. Burial will follow at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens with military honors. Guest are asked to wear a face-covering, maintain social distancing, and follow NC Covid-19 guidelines.

Mr. Mendez is survived by his loving wife Leticia Diaz Mendez; and his 6 children, José Antonio Mendez, Jr.,  Naomi Margarita Mendez, Carmen Leticia Frazier-Mendez, Gail Lynn Echevarria-Mendez, Glenda Lynn Green-Mendez, Gilda Lee Bragg-Mendez, their spouses, his beloved grandchildren and brother, George Mendez. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made towards the purchase of Gideon Bibles in Mr. Mendez's memory to spread the Gospel message of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
