Wayne Boyd, 79, of Raleigh, passed away Sunday morning, November 1, 2020 at his home. He was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to the late Joseph George Boyd and Ellie Conder Boyd on March 30, 1941.
Wayne was the youngest of eleven siblings, with five sisters and five brothers. He spent his middle childhood and adolescence under the loving care of the Thompson Children’s Home in Charlotte where he had many additional “brothers and sisters” with whom he maintained lifelong relationships. Wayne graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and attended Wingate College before joining Mitchell Distributing Company where he spent his entire 43-year career as manager of the parts department.
Wayne was a wonderful husband, father, Papaw, brother, uncle and friend. While his grandchildren were his greatest joy, his passions included coaching youth sports, golfing, hunting, gardening and more recently, his backyard waterfall Koi pond. He always had the best-looking yard in the neighborhood and was generous in sharing the harvest of his summer garden. While Wayne moved to Raleigh in 2016, he spent 47 years living in Cary and always considered Cary Home. He was a member of the Cary Recreation Commission and Cary Baseball Commission for many years and also served as Pop Warner Football Commissioner. Wayne also spent many years on the Cary High School football “chain gang” and maintaining the athletic fields and was inducted into the Cary High School Sports Hall of Fame as a Volunteer in 1998. While Wayne was a life-long sports fan, he was particularly devoted to his Tar Heels and Yankees.
A private graveside service will be held at Pleasant Dale Baptist Church, Lancaster, South Carolina later this month.
Wayne is survived by his daughter, Trisha Jones & husband Jeff of Zebulon; son, Mark Boyd & wife Tracy of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Logan Jones of Zebulon and Caroline Boyd of Wake Forest; sister, Dot Hicklin and husband Richard of Sun City Center, FL, brother, Bill Boyd & wife Ann of Princeton, and brother-in-law Modie Walters & wife Fran of Lancaster, S.C., and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Elsie Walters Boyd and his second wife, Mary Jean Rodriguez Boyd.
