Wilma "Willie" Barnes Burgon

Wilma Lois “Willie” Barnes Burgon, 72, of Raleigh, passed Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2022 at Rex Hospital surrounded by her husband and children.

Willie was born in St. Petersburg, Florida on June 30, 1949 to the late William Langhorn Barnes and Lois Brown Shingleton Barnes. Her father’s work took her to several destinations as a child including Mississippi, Virginia, and Canada. She attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah with the love of her life, Jerry. They were married in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on August 17, 1973. Willie and Jerry then moved to California for 15 years where they started their family before finally settling in North Carolina in 1989.

When not in the garden or at Topsail Beach, Willie spent her time helping others. She volunteered in numerous service positions with her church including Relief Society president and Primary president. Willie also cared for others as a nurse aide with UNC Health Care in Chapel Hill. Her favorite things were flowers and babies, and as we all know, she was a great cook.

Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon, March 25, 2022 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5060 Six Forks Rd, Raleigh, NC 27609, followed by the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday morning, March 26, 2022 at the Latter-day Saints Cemetery, Hampstead, NC. Willie is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jerry Burgon; children, Wil Burgon(Rachael) of Raleigh, Bethany Burgon(John) of Raleigh and Spencer Burgon(Emily) of Nashville; grandchildren, Garrett Burgon, Hunter Burgon, Rowan Burgon, and Sophia Burgon; siblings, Linda Goodrich(Robert) of Belleville, IL, Clint Barnes(Colleen) of Heber City, UT and Molly Ungritch(Phil) of Lehi, UT; several nieces, nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn McCann.
